CCNA4: Final Exam

By on 8:29 PM
Review Notes, v. 3.1
1.1.1 Private addressing

1.1.2 Major NAT and PAT features
Dynamic NAT is designed to map a private IP address to a public address. Any IP address from a pool of public IP addresses is assigned to a network host. Overloading, or Port Address Translation (PAT), maps multiple private IP addresses to a single public IP address. Multiple addresses can be mapped to a single address because each private address is tracked by a port number.
1.1.3 Configuring NAT and PAT
The access list must permit only those addresses that are to be translated. Remember that there is an implicit “deny all” at the end of each access list.

1.1.4 Configuring DHCP
- Typically, a DHCP server will be configured to assign much more than an IP address. Other IP configuration values such as the default gateway can be set from the DHCP configuration mode. Using the default-router command sets the default gateway.
- A default router must be defined for clients
2.1.1 WAN devices
- For digital lines, a channel service unit (CSU) and a data service unit (DSU) are required. The two are often combined into a single piece of equipment, called the CSU/DSU. The CSU/DSU may also be built into the interface card in the router.
- A modem is needed if the local loop is analog rather than digital.
- A router is commonly considered a DTE device.
2.1.2 WAN Standards
WANs use the OSI reference model, but focus mainly on Layer 1 and Layer 2.
2.2.1 ISDN
- Another common application of ISDN is to provide additional capacity as needed on a leased line connection.
- ISDN is also used as a backup in the case of a failure of the leased line.

I will post chapter 3,4 on wednesday. See you soon. if you like this post, you can bookmarks this site. and get up date.

Application Manager restarts crashed Windows apps

By on 8:33 PM

Application Manager is a tiny Windows utility that monitors your running processes and compares it with a user-configured list of applications. If Application Manager notices that one of the apps you specify is not running, it will relaunch that program. In other words, it will restart any program that crashes.
Say you want to make sure that your instant messenger or desktop Twitter application is always running so you don’t miss any important messages. This program can check every thirty seconds, every two minutes, or whenever you specify to see if it’s running and if it’s been accidentally closed, Application Manager will relaunch it.
This utility could also come in handy if you’re running a web server, or if you tend to leave your computer on overnight to download files from BitTorrent.

Five Best Media Converters

By on 8:31 PM
You’ve downloaded an episode of your favorite TV show to watch on your commute or stream to your living room, but the file you downloaded isn’t supported on the device you want to use it with. Once a significant obstacle to enjoying your media anywhere, this problem is easily solved by any number of free media converters.

Super (Windows)

Super is a free media converter that acts as a graphical front end to several of the most powerful command line tools like FFmpeg, MEncoder, and MPlayer. The application boasts extensive options for customizing your preferences with virtually any aspect of your conversion. The downside to that control is that Super’s interface is cluttered and intimidating for first-time users. Luckily for most purposes, converting a file to the right format with Super is as simple as selecting your output format (e.g., Apple iPod) and just sticking with the defaults.

FormatFactory (Windows)

Format Factory is a free media converter for Windows that converts video, audio, and even images between formats. With a nice icon-driven interface for helping you choose the kind of conversion you’re looking for, FormatFactory is one of the friendliest batch media converters you’ll find.

MediaCoder (All Platforms)

MediaCoder is a batch media transcoder that converts video and audio from and to most popular formats through a powerful graphical interface. Like Super, MediaCoder is a front-end for a number of command line media tools, allowing you to get as simple or complex as you want with your conversions. MediaCoder is available on all platforms, but it’s best supported on Windows. MediaCoder is also available in device-specific flavors for the iPhone and iPod touch, PSP and more.

HandBrake (All Platforms)

HandBrake is a popular open-source media converter that encodes video from DVDs to many popular output formats. Available in both graphical and command line flavors, HandBrake can’t convert the range of formats the rest can—it’s limited to MPEG video (that includes DVD video).

FFmpeg (All Platforms)

FFmpeg is free, cross platform command-line encoding tool that powers many of the more popular graphical applications in this Hive Five. While FFmpeg has more of a learning curve than the rest, it’s also undeniably powerful and flexible.

Five Best Windows Firewalls

By on 8:29 PM
Connecting your laptop to the local coffee shop’s Wi-Fi without a good firewall and thinking you’re secure is like using a condom with thousands of holes in it and calling it safe sex. Your antivirus application is a good start, but if you want to make sure you’re computer is safe while you’re connected to the internet, a solid firewall is a must.

Comodo Firewall Pro (Freeware)

Comodo Firewall Pro is a powerful, free firewall utility. The application’s simple, clean interface belies its power, but make no mistake: Comodo is an excellent firewall packed with advanced options. In addition to the firewall, Comodo also comes packaged with an anti-malware tool called Defense+. If all you want is the firewall, be sure to select that option during installation.

ESET Smart Security (Shareware)

ESET Smart Security comes from the same company that makes NOD32. ESET Smart Security includes the NOD32 Antivirus along with a firewall and anti-spam filter. As a full-service solution, ESET Smart Security isn’t cheap at $60, but a 30-day trial is available. Like NOD32, Smart Security is a powerful tool with a small memory footprint.

ZoneAlarm Free Firewall (Freeware)

ZoneAlarm is a free software firewall from a company called Check Point. Not only does ZoneAlarm detect inbound intrusions, but it also lets you set per-application limits for outbound connections—meaning you can stop Google Chrome or iTunes from phoning home whenever they want, for example.

Your Router’s Built-In Firewall

Despite our request for a software firewall, many of you were still adamant about sticking with the firewall that’s built into the router you’re using on your home network. Fact is, if you don’t use your computer outside of your home, you don’t necessarily need a software firewall—and you don’t have to run a separate application eating up RAM to get great firewall protection. However, as soon as you and your laptop leave the safety of your home, your laptop has essentially no protection if you don’t set up some sort of software firewall. So while your router’s firewall may be great, just remember: It can’t follow you out the door.

Windows Firewall

Arguing that it gets a bad rap because it’s a Microsoft product, many of you are perfectly happy with the default Windows Firewall. It’s built directly into Windows, runs quietly in the background, and blocks suspicious attacks without requiring you to install any third-party software.

13 Great Free Backup Programs for Windows, Mac, and Linux

By on 8:28 PM

Making sure you’ve got a reliable backup solution is a must for any user – and more so for an administrator. Why? Well, mostly because your users probably aren’t very good at remembering to back up their own files. And so it falls to you to provide the right software for the job!
Backup software is a difficult category to tackle nowadays as the distinction between backup and synchronization apps has become a little blurred. Prices being what they are, my personal choice is to use external or removable hard drives for my backup chores – my current favorites are Bonkey and Cobian.
To make sure you’ve got plenty of options to choose from, I’ve split this list into three different categories so that you can choose from the options that are best suited to your environment.
Integrated Burning
Comodo Backup (Windows)

They do make than a great firewall. Comodo Backup is an excellent free solution. It has extremely flexible scheduling and notification options, supports FTP destinations, can burn multisession DVDs, and has a synchronization mode for quick realtime backups.
DFIncBackup (Windows)

As is the case with most backup applications, there’s a free and paid version. The free one still handles CD/DVD backups, and it also does incremental .zip jobs as well – only backing up files that have changed or weren’t present in your previous job.
SE Backup (Windows)

Sports a very simple interface, does CD and DVD burning and compression, and is available as a portable application. Scheduling isn’t built in, but it supports command line launching with parameters which works very well with Windows’ own Task Scheduler.
File Copy
Abakt (Windows)

Though it’s no longer developed, Abakt is still a great choice. It’s got a great file filtering system, supports 7zip and zip compression, file splitting, password protection, and does differential and incremental backups.
Areca (Windows)

Free, open source, and wicked powerful. Areca is loaded with features: compression, encryption, simulation, merging, transaction commit/rollback, filtering, and more. It’s command line interface provides excellent automation options and Areca also supports scripting of post-job actions.

Bonkey
(Windows and MacOS)

The “Backup Monkey.” If I was giving points for best mascot, this one would be a clear winner.
Bonkey runs on both Windows and Mac, and has a lot of great features. It supports email, FTP, and Amazon S3, compression, encryption, scheduling, and synchronization. It’ll even back up MS SQL server databases.
Cobian Backup (Windows)

Apart from being a great application, Cobian’s developer has an excellent tutorial online to help you get started. Though it is no longer open source, you may still download the last version that was (v8). There’s also a portable version.
One of my favorite features of Cobian is its ability to handle pre- and post- job events. I use it to issue net stop and net start commands to ensure safe backups of our horrible, horrible point-of-sale system. Cobian also has the ability to control and monitor all its instances on your network from your own workstation.
JaBack (Windows and MacOS)

Allows backup to FTP and email (as well as any drive on your computer or network), and sports a flexible scheduler. It also has a file monitor function that will perform backup operations whenever changes are detected.
Mathusalem (MacOS)

Offers FTP/SFTP, Amazon S3, WebDav, and SMB support for backups on OSX. Mathusalem can compress to zip and dmg, will resume failed uploads, and supports scheduling and command line launching. It’s also open source.

Server-Based

Bacula (Windows, MacOS and Linux)

Bacula is an enterprise grade network backup solution that runs on just about every platform imagineable. It’s a much more complex system than the other options I’ve mentioned, but is extremely powerful and well-suited to a medium or large scale network.
BackupPC (Windows and Linux)

A Linux-based, client-free enterprise solution for backing up Windows and Linux machines. BackupPC uses SMB, tar, and rsync to extract backup data from client computers. It ’s got a powerful web-based interface for administrators and users, and will even email reminders to users that have been remiss in performing backups.
It’s a very flexible solution, and is open source.
NasBackup (Windows and Linux)

Uses a simple Windows GUI and rsync to perform backups from client machines to a central server. It’ll do incremental backups, scheduling, compression, encryption, and the server offers useful per-client controls like limiting the number of versions to store and expiration dates. It also provides daily summaries via email.
Restore [win] [mac] [linux]

The self-proclaimed “reason backup was invented.” It’s definitely a great product, and full of terrific features. Its web interface is very easy to understand and use – and makes it easy for the mobile admin to monitor and control Restore from anywhere.
Restore supports FTP, WebDav, SSH/SFTP, and multiple revisions. It also provides powerful admin tools, making it easy to create and control users, groups, jobs, and scheduling.

TrayEverything minimizes any app to the Windows sysem tray

By on 8:24 PM

You can clear up space on a Windows desktop by minimizing applications you’re not currently looking at to the taskbar. But what happens when the taskbar is so overrun with programs that you can’t make heads or tales of it? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just minimize your applications to the system tray? TrayEverything is a Windows utility that lets you do just that.
Just download and install (or download the no-install ZIP version) of TrayEverything and run it. You’ll see a list of running applications. Right click on any program you want to minimize to the system tray and it will disappear from the desktop and Windows taskbar. In the system tray you’ll see a small icon representing the program. Just click that icon to bring the program back up.
Note that TrayEverything needs to be run each time you want to minimize an application to the system tray. Once it’s restored, clicking the program’s minimize button will send it to the taskbar, not the system tray. If you’re looking for a more permanent solution, you might want to check out  Trayconizer, a command line utility that you can add to any program shortcut in order to automatically minimize it to the system tray whenever you hit the minimize button.

Features

  • You can minimize to tray ANY window
  • You can completely hide the window, that is, no icon in the tray
  • You can hide the window and protect it with a password
  • You can group icons of the same application in one single icon – let’s not overfill the tray too!
  • You have FIVE different ways to minimize an application into tray:
    • Double click on the window’s caption in the TrayEverything main window
    • TrayEverything can add a new button in the title bar of each window to minimize it
    • TrayEverything can catch the click on the minimize button of the window and minimize it – no buttons added to the title bar
    • You can choose an hotkey to minimize windows with a single key press
    • Or you can let the application go by itself in the tray with the Autominimize feature – inactive windows will be autominimized by TrayEverything
  • The program has a built-in update engine
  • English/Italian/Japanese/Portuguese languages available
  • This program has been created using WinAPIs – no MFC!
  • Compatible with Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP – Not tested with Vista
  • Completely freeware
